WASHINGTON - The North Dakota State University football team visited The White House and met with President Donald Trump on Monday, March 4, in recognition of the program's seventh FCS national championship in eight years.
NDSU had 110 players and more than 40 coaches and athletic department staff on the trip. The team's charter flight departed Fargo at 4:30 a.m. and arrived in the nation's capital shortly before 8 a.m. Eastern Time.
Upon entering The White House around 10:30 in the morning, the team gathered in the East Room for photos before meeting President Trump in the State Dining Room for a light lunch of burgers and pizza.
President Trump made remarks about the recent severe weather in Alabama before commenting on the Bison football team's success. NDSU quarterback
Easton Stick presented a green No. 45 jersey with Trump's name across the back.
After the formal address, Trump posed for photos with players and staff before inviting the team into the Oval Office. NDSU president Dean Bresciani and athletic director
Matt Larsen delivered an autographed football and yellow Bison helmet.
From there, the Bison bussed to Capitol Hill for a scheduled luncheon hosted by U.S. Senator John Hoeven of North Dakota. The guests were treated to salad, sandwiches and desserts before a short program.
Senator Hoeven presented a U.S. flag and framed resolution recognizing NDSU's FCS-record seven national championships. In turn, Larsen presented a team-autographed football to Mr. Hoeven along with a replica national championship banner for the senator's office.
After a tour of the U.S. Capitol, the Bison bussed to the Lincoln Memorial and spent approximately 90 minutes touring some of the national monuments nearby before a scheduled 9 p.m. departure.
