FORT WAYNE, Ind. - An RBI double in the top of the 11th inning by
Jack Simonsen gave the North Dakota State baseball team a 5-4 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, in a game that was started on Friday night and halted due to darkness.
NDSU improved to 7-14 overall and 5-6 in Summit League play with the victory, as the Mastodons dropped to 5-23 overall and 0-11 in league play. The series finale was started after the conclusion of the suspended game, but was also suspended due to darkness after five innings of play. NDSU is currently leading 7-0 going into the sixth inning in a game that will be resumed at 12:30 p.m. (Central) on Sunday, April 7.
Purdue Fort Wayne started the scoring with three runs in the third inning. The Bison slowly started to chip away at the lead, starting with an RBI single to center field by
Charley Hesse that plated Simonsen. In the fifth inning,
Peter Brookshaw brought in
Jake Malec before
Brock Anderson singled up the middle to plate
Bennett Hostetler to tie the game.
With the game tied at 3-3 going into the ninth inning, Anderson singled to left center to plate Malec to give the Bison a 4-3 lead. The Mastodons answered with an RBI double in the ninth to force extras, which suspended the game on Friday until Saturday. In the top of the 11th, Simonsen doubled to right field, as Anderson scored the winning run.
Anderson, Simonsen and Hesse each had three hits to lead the Bison.
Max Loven had a no-decision on the mound, giving up three earned runs on nine hits and a walk in six innings. Loven struck out a career-high nine batters.
Hunter Koep tossed six innings, striking out four and allowing a run on two hits and a walk.
Jordan Harms earned his first win of the season, striking out one and allowing two hits in two innings.Â
