NDSU Women’s Basketball Adds Pair to Recruiting Class

5/31/2019 9:38:00 AM

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State women's basketball head coach Jory Collins has announced the signing of two players.

The Bison have added Stephen F. Austin State transfer Heaven Hamling and Kansas City, Kansas native Ryan Cobbins. Hamling will have three years of eligibility left after playing this past season for the LadyJacks.

"I couldn't be happier with our first two signees to North Dakota State," Collins said. "To get two young players of this caliber late in the recruiting process is exciting. They are very much the type of young people we want in our program."

Cobbins was a four-year letterwinner at Piper High School, scoring 1,243 career points and 464 career rebounds. Cobbins was a four-time Kansas Class 4A All-State selection, while also helping the team to four conference titles. Her team finished third at the 2017 and 2018 state tournament, while earning runner-up honors in 2019. She was named one of the top 10 players in the Kansas by Sports in Kansas, while also being a nominee for the McDonald's All-American Game. Over four years, she led Piper to an 88-7 record, including a 23-1 record as a senior.

"Ryan is a player I've watched play her whole high school career, both in high school and on the summer circuit," Collins stated. "Her high school record at Piper High School in Kansas City is terrific. She also played for the Missouri Phenom, which is one of the premier club teams in the country. Ryan is going to impact us on and off the floor immediately. She is such a quality person to go along with being very talented. Her versatility is her biggest asset. She can play the 2/3/4 all at a high level. We're very fortunate to have her join us this late in the process."

A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., Hamling played in 32 games as a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State. She averaged 5.4 points per game in 16.3 minutes per game. In her first collegiate game, she scored 15 points in 21 minutes against 24th-ranked Miami. She also scored 14 points against New Orleans and 12 points against McNeese. She hit at least two 3-pointers in 12 of the 32 games she appeared in, while ranking sixth in 3-point percentage (.418) in the Southland Conference. Hamling played at Grand Rapids High School, where she was a four-year letterwinner. She averaged 19.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 3.4 assists per game in her high school career. She was a three-time all-state selection and ranked among the top 15 players in the state of Minnesota as a senior. She was a top-five finalist for Miss Minnesota Basketball. With 2,783 points, she is the all-time leading scorer at Grand Rapids High School. She led her team to a third place finish at the 2018 Minnesota State Tournament.

"Heaven is a great addition to North Dakota State women's basketball," Collins added. "She is a terrific young lady who comes from a great family.  She had a great freshman season at Stephen F. Austin State. Her character and commitment to the game will positively impact the culture we are trying to establish.  Not only is she a winner, but she's a coach's kid as well. She has a tremendous feel for the game to go along with natural scoring ability. Heaven can play both on and off the ball but she has a scorer's mentality."

Hamling and Cobbins join a class that includes Emily Behnke (Two Rivers, Wis.), Nicole Scales (Park Ridge, Ill.) and Olivia Skibiel (Snohomish, Wash.).
