Bison Baseball Drops Two Close Games to UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The North Dakota State baseball team closed an eight-game road trip to the West Coast by dropping a pair of 3-2 decisions to UC Davis on Saturday.

NDSU dropped to 2-6 on the season, while the Aggies improved to 5-3. The Bison will travel to the opposite side of the country next weekend, facing St. Bonaventure in a four-game set in Florida. The two teams will play a single game on Friday and Sunday, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday.

In the opener, Peter Brookshaw had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while Tucker Rohde and Nick Emanuel each had a hit. Ben Smith suffered the loss on the mound, dropping to 0-2 on the year in six innings on the mound. Smith allowed three earned runs on seven this, while striking out a pair. Brock Anderson threw the final two innings, striking out one and allowing a hit.

The Aggies scored the first two runs of the game with two outs in the fourth inning. NDSU tied the game in the top of the sixth, as Brookshaw doubled to right field to bring in Jake Malec and Emanuel. The Aggies took the lead back with a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth.

Calen Schwabe led the Bison with a pair of hits in the nightcap, while Anderson, Bennett Hostetler, Rohde, Jack Simonsen and Tyler Hillman each had one. Riley Johnson went 3.2 innings in his second start of the year, allowing an earned run on two hits and four walks. Evan Sankey struck out three, while allowing an earned run on a hit in four innings on the bump. Gabe Pilla suffered the loss, allowing an earned run on a hit and a walk in the ninth.

NDSU started the scoring in the top of the first, as Simonsen singled to center field to bring in Anderson. The Aggies tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly. The Bison took the lead back in the third inning, as Hostetler hit his second home run of the season to left field to give NDSU a 2-1 lead. UC Davis tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a home run and won it on a single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning.
