NDSU Splits Pair at Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas – North Dakota State tied a school record with three double plays in the 4-2 win over Weber State in game one, but lost to Duke University 3-0 during the second day of the Texas Invitational at McCombs Field on Saturday, Feb. 22.

NDSU (5-8) closes out tournament play at Lipscomb (6-5) at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23.

Shortstop Montana DeCamp and first baseman Nicole Licea paired up for double plays to end the first and second innings. DeCamp took a line drive and flipped to Skylar Padgett to end the game in the seventh. It's the seventh time North Dakota State has recorded three DPs, the last at No. 14 Minnesota in the NCAA Regional on May 17, 2014. The Bison have 11 double plays this season.

DeCamp helped to produce the first run the Bison in the first. She singled, stole second, moved third on a force out and scored on an infield single by Licea.

NDSU extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning when both Dez Cardenas and Madyson Camacho both second on a Weber State error.

Weber State (5-9) tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth on RBI doubles from Faith Hoe and Chloe Camarero to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Bison pushed across an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it 4-2. Cardenas was hit by pitch, advanced to second on a walk, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on pinch-hitter Lauren Reimers RBI single to right with two outs.

Lainey Lyle (1-3) and Paige Vargas pitched for NDSU with Lyle earning her first collegiate win and Vargas her second career save. Lyle allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked four. Vargas served up the game-ending DP. Kate Donaldson (1-4) and Amanda Sink pitched for Weber State with Donaldson taking the loss.

Caroline Jacobsen hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and Brianna Butler tossed a three-hit shutout as Duke (11-2) defeated North Dakota State 3-0 in the second game.

Butler (3-1) allowed only one Bison baserunner to reach third base in the game. She walked two and struck out two in lowering her ERA to 0.71. Jacobsen finished with two of the six hits for the Blue Devils.

Vargas (3-4) took the loss for NDSU. She struck out four and walked one, allowing Duke just three hits after the first inning. Sam Koehn had a double, while Stephanie Soriano and Cardenas each added a single.
