VERMILLION, S.D. - The North Dakota State women's basketball team closed the regular season on Sunday, as the Bison fell 81-61 at South Dakota.
NDSU dropped to 14-8 overall and 9-7 in Summit League play with the loss, while South Dakota improved to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in league play. The Bison earned the number three seed in next week's Summit League Tournament, the highest seed the Bison have been since being the number three seed in 2009. NDSU will face sixth-seeded Denver in the quarterfinals, with tipoff set for 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.
Heaven Hamling led the Bison with 19 points, while
Ryan Cobbins and
Emily Dietz added 15 and 10 respectively. Cobbins had seven rebounds, while Dietz grabbed six boards.
Abby Schulte had career-highs in assists (four) and blocked shots (two), while Hamling grabbed two steals. It was the 100th game played as a Bison for Dietz. Hannah Sjerven led the Coyotes with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bison were 19-of-50 (38%) from the field and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from 3-point range. South Dakota was 28-of-65 (43.1%) from the floor and 10-of-25 (40%) from downtown. Both teams were 15-of-19 (78.9%) at the free throw line. South Dakota had a 22-5 advantage in points off turnovers and 32-14 advantage in the paint.
An early 17-7 run by South Dakota gave the Coyotes a 17-11 lead after the first quarter. The Coyotes opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run, pushing the lead to double digits for the remainder of the game.
