Western Illinois Rallies to Snap Bison Baseball Winning Streak

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois scored four runs with two outs in the eighth inning, as the Leathernecks beat the North Dakota State baseball team 9-7 Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped NDSU's eight-game winning streak, the longest road winning streak in the country.

The Bison drop to 14-4 overall and 3-1 in the Summit League with the loss, while Western Illinois improved to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in league play. NDSU returns to action on Friday, March 26 with a doubleheader at Oral Roberts. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.

Six different Bison accounted for six NDSU hits in the loss. Bennett Hostetler and Calen Schwabe each scored twice, while Peter Brookshaw drove in a pair of runs. Max Loven had a no-decision on the mound in two innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out three. Tristen Roehrich struck out one, while walking two and allowing three hits in two innings, while giving up three runs (two earned). Gabe Pilla suffered the loss, as he dropped to 0-1 on the year in 3.2 innings of work. Pilla allowed four runs on two walks and three hits, while striking out five. Zach Smith earned the final out on the mound.

NDSU had an early 1-0 lead on a home run in the first inning by Hostetler. The Leathernecks answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. A single up the middle by Jake Malec in the second tied the game as Schwabe scored. Western Illinois scored a pair of runs in the third and a run in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. In the sixth, Brookshaw homered to center field to plate Schwabe before Hostetler scored of an error on a wild pitch to tie the game. NDSU took a 6-5 lead in the seventh as Zach Solano scored on a balk. With two outs in the eighth, the Leathernecks scored on two two-runs singles to take a 9-6 lead. Wyatt Nelson scored in the top of the ninth as Schwabe reached on an error, but the Bison couldn't bring in either of the two runners left on base to tie the game. The Bison left 13 runners on base in the loss.
