OXFORD, Miss. -
Sam Koehn's two-out RBI single in the eighth inning scored pinch runner
Kara Diaz to give the North Dakota State softball team a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Samford on Sunday, March 7, in the final game for both teams at the Ole Miss Classic.
North Dakota State (2-8) rallied in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Koehn led off with a walk and scored on
Avery Wysong's triple, and
Nicole Licea followed with an RBI groundout to knot the game at 3-3. The Bison stranded a pair of runners on the corners after a walk to
Dez Cardenas and a single by
Madyson Camacho.
NDSU's
Paige Vargas pitched all eight innings for her first victory of the season. She allowed one earned run and scattered eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Bulldogs (7-9) took advantage of three early NDSU errors to jump out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Bison went scoreless until the fifth when Wysong hit a one-out double and Licea followed with an RBI single into the right-center gap to make it 3-1.
Wysong finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
North Dakota State is scheduled to travel to Middle Tennessee State next weekend for five games in the MTSU Invitational against Illinois State, Middle Tennessee State and Dayton.
