NDSU Volleyball Tops Butler and California at Cal Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif.  – Ali Hinze logged two double-doubles to help guide North Dakota State past Butler, 3-1, and California, 3-1, on Friday at the Cal Tournament at Haas Pavilion.

In match one, NDSU topped Butler, 3-1, after Hinze logged her third double-double of the season with a season-high 20 kills and 11 digs. She also reached the 20-kill mark for the first time this season and third time in her career.

NDSU started the day fast doubling up Butler, 12-6, following an attack error. The Bulldogs were able make a late surge to pull back within two, 23-21, but the Bison closed out the frame, 25-21, taking advantage of a service error and kill from Kaylee Hanger. Syra Tanchin, Michelle Glover and Hinze each contributed three kills in the frame.

Butler responded in the second set to build to a 21-16 advantage. NDSU then found its rhythm assembling a 4-2 run to pull back within three, 23-20, following a kill from Boling. However, the Bulldogs closed out the frame, 25-21, to even the match.

Both teams traded points early in the third frame that saw a match-high eight tie scores until NDSU put together a momentum-swinging 10-0 run to open up an 18-8 edge after a kill from Boling. The Bison went to win the set, 25-15. NDSU registered a team-best .367 hitting percentage in the frame.

The Bison continued to roll into the fourth stanza building a 13-7 edge following a 7-1 run. The Bulldogs then retaliated with a 4-0 run of their own to pull back within two, 13-11. NDSU held off the comeback attempt and went to win the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.

As a team, the Bison tallied 55 kills, 51 digs and six service aces to go along with a .254 hitting percentage.

Tanchin reached double figures in kills for the fourth time this season with 11. Glover also tallied 10 kills and .500 hitting percentage. Raegen Reilly passed out a match-high 43 assists with seven digs. Kaylee Hanger tallied 11 digs, while Taylor Quan added in 10 digs to round out the top performers.

In the second match, NDSU won the final three sets to roll past Cal, 3-1. Four Bison hit double figures in kills with Tanchin setting the pace with a team-best 14. Hinze also logged her second straight and fourth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs. Reilly distributed a match-high 50 assists with nine digs, while Hanger notched a match-best 16 digs.

Both teams traded points to begin the contest until Cal created a 18-13 edge to force a Bison timeout. NDSU pushed back pulling back within three, 22-19, following back-to-back kills from Reilly. The Bears answered to win the set, 25-19, after rattling off three straight points. Kirstin Tidd paced NDSU in the frame with seven kills and .556 hitting percentage.

Cal opened the second set building a 16-13 lead to force an NDSU timeout. The Bison then stormed back to lock the contest, 21-21, following a clutch kill from Tidd. NDSU kept its foot on the gas from there closing the stanza on a 4-1 run to take the set, 25-22.

The Bison carried momentum over into the third set sprinting out to a 7-3 edge following back-to-back kills from Boling and Hinze. NDSU stretched its lead up to eight, 18-10, after Glover added in a kill. The Bears then stormed back to steal the late lead, 23-22, but the Bison answered with a clutch 3-0 run to win the set, 25-23.

NDSU continued to roll into the fourth set creating a 10-2 lead after a kill from Boling. The Bison continued to apply pressure expanding their lead into double digits, 14-4, to force a Cal timeout. NDSU went on to hold off a late rally attempt by Cal and win the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.
