NDSU Volleyball Comeback Falls Short at Omaha, 3-1

OMAHA, Neb. – The North Dakota State volleyball team came up short at Omaha, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Baxter Arena.

Ali Hinze notched her ninth double-double of the season with 21 digs and 12 kills. Syra Tanchin connected on a team-high 14 kills, while Kelley Johnson also registered a double-double with a match-high 44 assists and 11 digs. Logan O'Brien led the way on the defensive side totaling a match-high 24 digs.

After dropping the first two frames, NDSU (13-7, 6-2 Summit) battled back in the third set after putting together five unanswered points to steal a 15-12 edge following a block from Michelle Glover and Johnson. The Mavericks (12-7, 7-2 Summit), who have won their last seven matches, then cut the deficit down to one, 24-23, after a kill from McKenna Ruch. Tanchin responded with a kill of her own for the Bison to seal the set, 25-23.

NDSU carried momentum into the fourth frame quickly opening up a 6-2 lead after Allison Scheiwiller connected on a kill. Omaha answered back constructing a 7-2 run of its own to steal the edge, 9-8, following a kill from Shayla Wieseler. Both teams then traded points until the Bison grabbed a late two-point lead, 23-21, following kills from Hinze and Glover. However, the Mavericks closed the set with a 4-0 run to win the frame, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

NDSU will return home against Western Illinois on Thursday. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
