FARGO, N.D. – Four Bison reached double digits in kills as the North Dakota State volleyball team came up short against South Dakota State, 3-1, on Tuesday night at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
Ali Hinze led the way for NDSU (17-8, 10-3 Summit) tying a career-high 24 digs with a team-high 14 kills.
Ally Barth notched a season-high 13 kills, while
Syra Tanchin added 12 digs, 10 kills and a career-high six blocks.
Michelle Glover tallied 11 kills and
Kelley Johnson handed out a match-high 46 assists with 14 digs.
NDSU opened up an 11-7 edge in the first set after Barth and Tanchin connected on a block. The Jackrabbits (11-13, 5-7 Summit) then put together four straight points to steal a 16-14 advantage by the midway point. SDSU held off NDSU the rest of the way to take the frame, 25-23.
After the Jackrabbits ran out to a 13-9 edge in the second stanza, the Bison responded with six straight points of their own to make the score 15-13 following an attack error. NDSU then pushed its lead up to four, 18-14, following back-to-back kills from Hinze. The Bison went on to win the set, 25-21.
SDSU took advantage of attack errors to build a 10-4 lead in the third frame. NDSU attempted to get a late rally going after a block from Barth and Tanchin to cut the deficit to four, 21-17. However, the Jackrabbits closed the stanza with four unanswered points to win the set, 25-17.
NDSU fought back in the fourth set the saw a match-high 13 tie scores and six lead changes. SDSU was able to steal a late 18-16 lead after a kill from Sydney Andrews. The Bison answered back with a 4-0 run of their own capped off by a kill from Barth to regain the edge, 20-18. However, the Jackrabbits closed the set on a 6-2 run to seal the win, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
NDSU will be back in action at North Dakota on Saturday. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
