FARGO, N.D. –
Kelley Johnson and
Ali Hinze each notched a double-double to help lift the North Dakota State volleyball team past Omaha, 3-2, on Thursday night at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
Johnson reached the 50-assist mark for the sixth time this season with a match-high 57 to go along with 13 digs. Hinze totaled a team-high 19 kills with 12 digs, while
Logan O'Brien added a match-high 19 digs.
The Bison (19-8, 12-3 Summit) connected on a season-high 73 kills with five different players reaching double digits. NDSU also tallied a season-best 11 service aces, including three from Hinze.
NDSU controlled the pace early assembling six straight points capped off by back-to-back aces from Hinze to make the score 12-4. The Bison continued to apply pressure doubling up the Mavericks (17-9, 12-4 Summit), 14-7, after
Syra Tanchin delivered a kill. NDSU held off Omaha the rest of the way to win the frame, 25-21.
The Mavericks battled back in the second set running out to a 6-2 edge. The Bison responded with four straight points to lock the contest, 6-6, after back-to-back aces from
Taylor Quan. Both teams then settled in working through 10 tie scores to find themselves locked, 23-23, following a kill from
Ally Barth. However, the Mavericks went to pick up two straight points to close the frame, 25-23.
Both teams continued to exchange points throughout the third set until Omaha was able to grab a 14-12 lead at the midway point. NDSU then responded with momentum-shifting 5-0 run to steal the lead, 17-14, after a kill from Hinze. The Bison didn't look back from there and went on to take the set, 25-23.
NDSU started the fourth frame opening up a 12-8 lead after a kill from
Alexis Boling. Omaha answered back with four straight points to lock the contest, 12-12. Both teams then traded points until the Mavericks closed the set on a 4-1 run to win the frame, 26-24.
Both teams continued to exchange points deep into the fifth set that also featured 10 tie scores. The Mavericks were able to assemble a quick 3-0 run to steal a 14-12 advantage after a kill from Shayla McCormick. NDSU answered to close the frame on a 5-1 run that was highlighted by a kill and ace from Tanchin to win the set, 17-15, and the match, 3-2.
NDSU will wrap up its home schedule hosting Denver for senior day on Saturday. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
