NDSU Volleyball Falls Short at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Ali Hinze reached the 1,000 career kills mark as the North Dakota State volleyball team came up short at South Dakota State, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena.
NDSU finishes the regular season with a 20-10 (13-5 Summit) overall record. The Bison reached the 20-win mark for only the fifth time in the Division I era and first time under head coach Jennifer Lopez. NDSU will be back in action at the Summit League Tournament after earning the third seed. The Bison will face sixth-seeded North Dakota in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The tournament is hosted by Omaha at Baxter Arena.
Michelle Artis connected on a team-high 16 kills with a .464 hitting percentage. Hinze also totaled 13 kills to reach the 1,000 career kills mark with 1,010. She becomes one of nine players in the NDSU Division I era to accomplish the feat. Syra Tanchin notched a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs to round out the top performers.
Both teams battled through the opening set that featured 12 ties and five lead changes. The Bison were able to open up a 19-17 lead after a kill Syra Tanchin. The Jackrabbits pushed back to tie the frame, 21-21, after a bad set. SDSU then closed the set on a 4-2 run to win the frame, 25-23.
SDSU carried the momentum in the second set with five straight points to steal a 13-11 lead by the midway point. The Jackrabbits then pushed their edge up to four, 20-16, after an attack error. NDSU battled its way back to lock the set, 23-23, after three straight points, including two kills from Tanchin. However, SDSU went on to pick up the final two points to win the set, 25-23.
The Jackrabbits started the third frame running out to a 13-4 lead after a kill from Sydney Andrews. The Bison responded with six straight points to cut the deficit back down to three, 13-10, following a kill from Tanchin. The Bison continued to apply pressure with another 3-0 run to lock the set, 24-24, after an attack error. However, SDSU grabbed the final two points to win the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.
