GRAND FORKS, N.D. –
Ali Hinze connected on a match-high 19 kills to help lead the North Dakota State volleyball team past North Dakota, 3-2, on Saturday night at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
With the win, the Bison improve to 18-8 (11-3 Summit) on the season and have won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Fighting Hawks. With the loss, North Dakota drops to 12-13 (9-5 Summit) on the season.
Hinze totaled 19 kills with nine digs and six total blocks.
Kelley Johnson handed out a match-high 45 assists with 10 digs and three aces, while
Logan O'Brien added a team-best 13 digs on the defensive side. NDSU also notched a season-high 14.0 total blocks with
Ally Barth leading the way with a match-best eight.
The Fighting Hawks doubled up the Bison, 10-5, after a kill from Elizabeth Norris in the opening frame. NDSU pulled its way back to lock the contest by the midway point, 15-15, following a block from Hinze and
Michelle Glover. Both teams then traded points until the Fighting Hawks closed the set on a 4-1 run to steal the frame, 25-20.
NDSU pushed back in the second set building a five-point edge, 20-15, after a block from Hinze and Barth. North Dakota then battled its way back with four straight points to tie the frame, 21-21, following an attack error. The Bison closed the set on a 4-1 run powered by two kills from Hinze to win the stanza, 25-22.
The Bison found some offensive rhythm in the third frame registering a match-best .394 hitting percentage. Both teams traded points until NDSU assembled three straight points to grab a 16-13 edge after a kill from
Syra Tanchin. The Bison went on to hold off the Fighting Hawks the rest of the way to the win the set, 25-23.
North Dakota raced out to a 12-4 advantage in the fourth set after a kill from Paige Barber. NDSU attempted to spark a comeback after three straight points to pull within five, 15-10, following a block from Barth and
Alexis Boling. North Dakota went on to close out the frame, 25-15.
The Bison started fast in the fifth set grabbing a quick 6-3 edge following a kill from Glover. NDSU kept the pressure on from there stretching its lead to 11-4 after Barth delivered a kill. The Bison finished out the frame, 15-6, and the match, 3-2.
NDSU will be back in action hosting Omaha on Thursday night. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
