Big Fifth Inning Propels NDSU Past Western Illinois, 15-6

MACOMB, Ill. –  The Bison plated five runs in the fifth inning as the North Dakota State baseball team picked up its seventh straight win after topping Western Illinois, 15-6, on Friday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

After the Leathernecks (2-20, 0-4 Summit) jumped out to the early 1-0 lead with a home run in the opening inning, Peter Brookshaw answered for the Bison (16-8, 4-0 Summit) grounding out to second to score Calen Schwabe and lock the contest, 1-1, in the third frame. NDSU kept the momentum rolling into third grabbing their first lead of the day following an RBI single off the bat of Brock Anderson to make the score 3-2.

NDSU cracked the game open in the fifth inning scoring five runs on seven hits. Jack Simonsen got the big frame started blasting an RBI double into left before Druw Sackett followed it up with an RBI single to left to stretch the lead to 5-2. Will Busch then connected on a two RBI single to extend the edge to 7-2. Calen Schwabe finished the inning with an RBI single to score Busch to increase the lead to 8-2.

NDSU continued to roll into the sixth with three more runs and extending its lead to 11-3 after Calen Schwabe delivered a two RBI single. Following two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth from the Leathernecks, the Bison put game out reach with three insurance runs in the ninth capped off by a two RBI double from Busch to help secure the 15-6 victory.
