Ninth Inning Rally Lifts NDSU Past Western Illinois, 6-4

MACOMB, Ill. –  The North Dakota State baseball team rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to sneak past Western Illinois, 6-4, and extended their win streak to eight games on Saturday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

Following a scoreless first two innings, Western Illinois (2-21, 0-5 Summit) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Dillon Sears was able to steal home in the third frame. Peter Brookshaw responded for NDSU (17-8, 5-0 Summit) with his fifth home run of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning. The Leathernecks retaliated in the bottom half of the stanza after Nick Mitchelll connected on a two RBI double to stretch the lead up to 4-1.

Hunter Koep pulled the Bison back within two with his fourth home run of the season to make the score 4-2 in the sixth. One frame later, Brookshaw once again came up big for NDSU with an RBI single up the middle to cut the edge down to one, 4-3.

NDSU kept the comeback going into the ninth after Brock Anderson delivered an RBI single into center field to score Cadyn Schwabe to lock the contest, 4-4. Logan Williams then followed it up getting a two RBI double to drop down the left field line to steal the lead, 6-4. Jake Drew finished the bottom half of the frame sending the Leathernecks down in order to complete the 6-4 comeback victory.

The Bison totaled seven hits as a team with Brookshaw and Williams each contributing two hits and two RBI.

Cade Feeney got the start on the hill and tossed six strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Drew (1-0) finished the final 1.1 innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
