LAFAYETTE, La. – The North Dakota State volleyball team split day one of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic on Friday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym. The Bison came up short against Louisiana, 3-1, before picking up their second sweep of the season with the 3-0 win over the University of Texas San Antonio.
In the first match of the day, NDSU (4-1) fell short against Louisiana (3-1), 3-1.
Syra Tanchin logged her third double-double of the season with a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs.
Kelley Johnson also added a double-double with a team-best 31 assists and 10 digs.
Ava Schmoll contributed a team-high 12 digs on the defensive side.
The Ragin' Cajuns controlled the tempo in the opening the set building a 17-14 advantage by the midway point. The Bison fought their way back pulling within two, 21-19, after a kill from
Michelle Glover and ace from Schmoll. However, Louisiana held off NDSU the rest of the way, 25-20. The Ragin' Cajuns once again started fast in the second frame with a 20-12 edge to force an NDSU timeout. The Bison weren't able to get anything going the rest of the way and dropped the second set, 25-15.
NDSU battled back in the third frame that saw a match-high 15 tie scores and six lead changes. Both teams traded points until NDSU was able to steal a late, 23-21, edge following an attack error. The Ragin' Cajuns answered with two straight points to lock the contest, 23-23, coming out of a timeout. The Bison finished the frame out with a kill from Glover and an attack error to win the set, 25-23.
The Ragin Cajuns pushed back in the fourth stanza sprinting out to an 11-5 advantage. NDSU attempted to rally cutting the deficit down to 14-8 after kills from
Alexis Boling and Tanchin. Louisiana went on to close out the rest of the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-1.
In the second match of the day, NDSU picked up its second sweep of the season after rolling past UTSA (1-4), 3-0. Tanchin connected on a match-high 14 kills with a .619 hitting percentage. Johnson passed out a match-best 33 assists and Schmoll added in a team-best 12 digs.
The Bison got off to fast start with a 6-1 run capped off by a block from
Ali Hinze to steal an early 7-2 advantage. UTSA pulled its way back lock the contest, 14-14, after four straight points. The Bison responded with a 4-0 run of their own to open up an 18-14 edge following an ace from
Taylor Quan. The Bison went on to take the opening set, 25-19.
NDSU began the second frame assembling a 6-0 run to build a 13-9 edge after a block from Tanchin and Glover. The Bison then stretched their lead up to eight, 19-12, following a kill from Hinze. NDSU went on to win the set, 25-20.
UTSA battled back in the third frame with three straight points to steal the lead, 14-12, and force a Bison timeout. NDSU responded with a 3-0 run of its own to lock the contest, 16-16, following an ace from Hinze. After both teams traded points, the Bison put the match away with three straight points to regain the lead, 24-20, after a kill from Glover. NDSU closed the frame, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
NDSU will wrap up play at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic tomorrow against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
