MACOMB, Ill. – The North Dakota State volleyball team picked up its second straight sweep after rolling past Western Illinois, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Western Hall.
Taylor Quan paced the Bison (9-5, 2-0 Summit) with a season-high 20 digs.
Kelley Johnson handed out a match-best 39 assists with 17 digs, while
Ali Hinze totaled a match-high 16 kills with 13 digs and two blocks.
NDSU, who has won 17 of the last 18 meetings between the two teams, began the contest building an 11-7 advantage following a block from
Syra Tanchin and
Michelle Glover. The Bison continued to roll stretching their lead to 17-12 after back-to-back kills from Hinze. NDSU went on to win the set, 25-14. Johnson led all players with 11 assists and 10 digs in the stanza.
Western Illinois (4-10, 0-2 Summit) pushed back in the second set doubling up NDSU early, 6-3. The Bison responded with a momentum-shifting 6-2 run to steal the lead after a kill from Tanchin to make the score 9-8. NDSU then increased its advantage up to 17-12 following a block from Hinze. The Bison closed out the second set, 25-18.
NDSU started the third frame doubling up the Leathernecks, 14-7, after a kill from Glover. Western Illinois made one final surge constructing a late 7-3 run to cut the deficit down to one, 24-23, and force an NDSU timeout. Hinze answered for the Bison with a kill to seal the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
NDSU will be back in action hosting South Dakota on Tuesday. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
