GREELEY, Colo. –
Jack Steil connected on a clutch solo home run and
Carson Hake delivered an RBI triple in the 10th inning to help lift the North Dakota State baseball team past Northern Colorado, 7-5, on Friday afternoon at Jackson Field.
With the win, the Bison extend their season-best win streak to six games and improve to 17-26 (11-5 Summit) on the season. Northern Colorado drops to 8-29 (5-11 Summit) overall.
After working through two scoreless innings to begin the contest,
Stephen Lund put the Bison on the scoreboard with his sixth home run of the season to left field to make the score 1-0. NDSU then pushed its lead up to 3-0 in the fifth following a pair of RBI singles from
Druw Sackett and
Peter Brookshaw. Northern Colorado answered back to pull within one, 3-2, after scoring two runs on four hits in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
The Bears then grabbed the lead in the seventh scoring two more runs on three hits to make the score 4-3 after Craig Kenny connected on an RBI single. Steil answered for the Bison in the eighth using an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the contest, 4-4. Lund followed it up with an RBI double to regain the lead, 5-4. Northern Colorado responded once again in the ninth with a solo home run off the bat of Hayden Heinze to lock the score, 5-5, and send it to extras.
Steil gave the Bison energy in the 10th frame with a solo home run to right field to steal the lead, 6-5. Hake kept the big inning going connecting on his first career triple to score Lund and stretch the edge to 7-5. Northern Colorado attempted to tie the contest getting two runners on in the bottom half before
Skyler Riedinger fired back-to-back strikeouts to seal the 7-5 victory.
The Bison totaled 11 hits as a team with Lund posting a season-high three in five at-bats to go along with two runs and two RBI.
Cade Feeney made the start on the hill tossing three strikeouts with no walks over 6.0 innings, while
Joey Danielson also tallied two strikeouts over 2.1 frames. Riedinger (2-3) earned the win finishing the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts.
NDSU will continue its series with Northern Colorado tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. CT
