NDSU Wrestling Drops Border Bell Battle with SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State wrestling fell to #11 South Dakota State 34-6 Sunday afternoon in the battle for the Border Bell at Frost Arena.

The Bison picked up an upset win from Fernando Barreto at 133 pounds and closed out the dual with a win at heavyweight from Devon Dawson.

Barreto picked up the first win of the match for NDSU, upsetting #18 Derrick Cardinal with a 7-2 decision. Barreto secured an early takedown in the first and then carried a 3-2 lead into the third. After a neutral start in the third, Barreto sealed the match with a second takedown and added a riding time point in his first career ranked win.

Dawson scored the second win with a late takedown in the heavyweight match, defeating Bowen McConville 4-2. Dawson gave up an escape in the second, but answered back with an escape to start the third. Late in the period, Dawson took down McConville at the edge and kept his feet in to secure the three points. McConville would grab a late escape to close the scoring.

Petersen suffered his first dual loss in nine matches to #22 Alek Martin. Petersen secured a late takedown to tie the match at 7, but Martin escaped just before the time expired for an 8-7 decision.

The Bison will now set their sights on the Big 12 Championships in two weeks. NDSU will make the trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the two-day event, which is set for March 9-10 at the BOK Center.
