NDSU Wrestling Falls in Big 12 Dual at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. – North Dakota State wrestling fell to Wyoming on Sunday 30-13 in Big 12 action at the Uniwyo Sports Complex. Wyoming took seven of the 10 matches in the dual, with seven matches also resulting in bonus-point decisions.
 
The Cowboys jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Bison 133 pounder Fernando Barreto battled through an injury and secured a couple takedowns in his match, allowing only a decision. However, Wyoming picked up tech falls at 125 and 141 pounds.
 
Max Petersen would score the first win for the Bison at 149 pounds, as he dominated #23 Gabe Willochell in an upset with a 19-4 tech fall. Petersen had two first period takedowns and then added two more in the second, including a four-point near fall. He sealed the match in the third with another takedown.
 
Wyoming would answer right back with a fall at 157 pounds in the first period and then a 9-5 decision in the 165-pound match.
 
Gaven Sax would pick up the second win for the Bison, scoring another tech fall as he shutout Quayin Short at 174 pounds. Sax scored an early takedown and then recorded a pair of four-point near falls in the first period. Sax then started off the second with a reversal before a final four-point nearfall to secure the win.
 
Wyoming would then secure the dual victory with a pair of major decisions. However, Devon Dawson would give the Bison a final win to close out the dual, claiming a 9-4 win at heavyweight over Kevin Zimmer. Trailing 3-2, Dawson took the lead with a takedown into a four-point nearfall in the second to wrap up his scoring in the match.
 
NDSU will have a week off before they return to the Scheels Center for the final home dual this season, welcoming in the Missouri on Friday, February 16. The Bison and Tigers are slated for a 7 p.m. and will be televised on WDAY Xtra and broadcast live on the radio on Bison 1660.
