GREELEY, Colo. – Both teams combined for 31 hits and 25 runs as Northern Colorado edged the North Dakota State baseball team with a walk-off double to steal the series opener, 13-12, on Friday afternoon at Jackson Field.
The Bison (8-21, 5-5 Summit) combined for a season-high 17 total hits with five different players contributing multiple hit games. It marked the most hits for NDSU in a single-game since it notched 20 at Texas State last season.
Jack Steil went 3-of-5 at the plate and tied a career-high four RBI.
Jake Schaffner went 3-of-6 at the plate, including his first career home run with a leadoff blast in the first inning.
NDSU also scored a season-best 12 runs and stole a season-high five bases.
Cadyn Schwabe tallied a season-high three runs with two stolen bases. He increased his career total to 51 over three seasons at NDSU, which ranks second in Bison history. Tim Colwell (2011-14) is the all-time leader with 52 stolen bases.
Leland Wilson made the start on the mound tossing a career-best six strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work.
Joey Danielson (0-4) finished the final inning with two strikeouts in the loss.
After both teams put up four runs each in the opening inning, Northern Colorado (7-25-1, 6-6-1 Summit) took advantage of a fielding error to steal a 6-4 advantage in the second frame. The Bison responded with three runs in the third to regain lead, 8-6.
Colten Becker sparked the inning with a three-run home run before Steil added an RBI single of his own.
The Bison continued to apply pressure adding on four more runs over the fourth and fifth innings to stretch their lead to 12-7 after Schaffner bounced an RBI single up the middle. The Bears then slowly pulled their way back plating two runs in the sixth and one in eighth to draw within two, 12-10, after a sacrifice fly. Northern Colorado closed the game out in the ninth scoring three more runs capped off by a walk-off RBI double down left line from Kai Wagner to secure the 13-12 win.
