MONTERREY, Mexico – The North Dakota State Men's golf team climbed one spot after the final 27-holes to finish seventh at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic at Club Campestre de Monterrey on Saturday afternoon.
Jake Skarperud (69-70-73—219) led the Bison through all three rounds of the event. The senior added three more birdies in the back nine of round two to finish -2 in the second round. Skarperud shot a team-high of 14 birdies for the event after carding three more in the final round to finish +1 in round three and -4 overall in 15
th of 71 golfers.
Carter White (71-73-71—215) finished just behind Skarperud in a tie for 19
th at -1 overall. White fired an eagle on the 15
th hole in the second round and picked up one birdie to finish +1 after the second half of the middle round. The freshman matched his round one score of -1 in the final 18-holes, recording four more birdies and 11 holes at par.
Rylin Petry (72-73-71—216) tallied his first round below par for the tournament in the final round. Petry added three birdies in the back nine of the second round to finish +1 and fired five more in the third round to finish -1. Petry recorded an even-par finish for the event and landed in a tie for 24
th overall.
Gabe Benson (73-77-71—221) was the final scoring NDSU golfer for both rounds two and three. Benson finished +5 after the back nine of the second round. The senior logged three birdies and 13 holes at par to finish -1 in the third round. Benson finished +5 overall in a tie for 39
th.
Andrew Ballou (74-81-75—230) and
Max Wilson (82-73-76—231) wrap up the Bison for the event. Ballou finished +9 in the second round and +3 in the third round after carding four birdies and eight holes at par. Wilson fired an eagle on the 12
th hole in the second round to finish +1, and +4 in the final round with one birdie. Ballou ended the tournament in 65
th at +14 overall, with Wilson one shot behind in a tie for 66
th at +15.
Together, the Bison (285-293-286—864) finished the second round +5 and the final round -2 to end at an even-par. VCU (282-277-275—834) finished -30 overall to claim the tournament title by a victory margin of 20 strokes, with Richmond (283-284-287—854) and UTRGV (280-286-288—854) sharing the runner-up position at -10.
NDSU Men's golf will take the winter off before returning to action for their spring season in February. The Bison will kick off the spring at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona at the Palm Valley Golf Club on February 15-17.
