NDSU Women’s Basketball Outlasts Pepperdine in Overtime, 82-80

MALIBU, Calif. – The North Dakota State women's basketball team trailed by as many as six points in the fourth quarter before rallying for an 82-80 win in overtime against Pepperdine at the Malibu Classic at Firestone Fieldhouse on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Bison extend their win streak to seven games and improve to 9-2 overall. It marks the best start through the first 11 games since the 2020-21 season. With the loss, Pepperdine drops to 7-3 overall on the season.
Avery Koenen posted her fifth straight double-double with a season-best 29 points and game-high 12 rebounds. The Montevideo, Minn., native drained a career-high 13 free throws on 16 attempts and added two assists with two steals to her stat line over 38 minutes. Her 13 made free throws are tied for the sixth-most in a single-game in Bison history.
Jocelyn Schiller contributed a season-best 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line with a team-best three assists. Marisa Frost also netted 14 points over a career-high 42 minutes.
As a team, NDSU shot 38.8 percent (26-67) from the field and 76.5 percent (26-34) from the free throw line. The Bison scored 42 points in the paint and 20 points off of turnovers.
After the Bison opened up a nine-point, 37-28, lead at the half, Pepperdine answered to start the third quarter on a 15-4 run to steal a 43-41 lead after Meghan Fiso hit a jumper at the 5:25 mark. The two teams then traded points throughout the fourth frame until the Bison closed out the final 3:42 on an 8-2 run capped off by a made free throw from Molly Lenz to send the contest into overtime, 70-70.
NDSU carried the momentum into the extra frame starting out on an 7-2 run that featured five points from Schiller to open up a 77-72 edge with 3:01 to play. The Wave made one final surge pulling within two after Elli Guiney connected on a layup with five seconds to play, but the Bison closed out the remaining time to earn the 82-80 victory.
NDSU will back in action tomorrow to wrap up play at the Malibu Classic against UTRGV. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. CT
