FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling fell to RV Utah Valley 24-19 Saturday night in Big 12 action inside the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
 
The Bison picked up three wins in the first five matches to take the lead, but Utah Valley raced back with four-straight wins in the upper weights to secure their second-straight defeat over the Bison.
 
After the Bison fell in the opener at 125 pounds, No. 24 Kyle Burwick put the Bison in front with a second period pin against Kase Mauger at 133 pounds. Burwick used a second period takedown to go up 6-1, and then worked for the pin, securing the fall at 4:10.
 
Utah Valley would jump back in front with a tech fall at 141 pounds, but No. 31 Gavin Drexler and No. 33 Max Petersen secured wins for NDSU at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Drexler reeled off his fifth-straight major decision, all in duals, with an 11-1 victory over Smokey McClure at 149. Drexler had a takedown in each period, including one in the final seconds to secure the major.
 
Petersen rallied from behind to win a thrill victory at 157 over Ryker Fullmer. Petersen gave up a first period takedown but responded with two in the second to take a 9-5 lead. Fullmer would fight back to tie it at 9-9 with a late takedown, but Petersen secured the decision with riding time.
 
Utah Valley responded in the second half with four-straight major decisions from 165 pounds to 197, clinching the dual before the final match. However, Drew Blackburn-Forst capped the night for the Bison with the second NDSU pin, as he threw Jack Forbes to the mat, rolling him to his back and clinching the match with a fall at 1:58 in the first period.
 
The Bison return to action next Saturday night, as NDSU welcomes in Northern Iowa to the Scheels Center. The dual is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be televised live on WDAY Xtra.
