SAN DIEGO, Calif. – North Dakota State junior
Zach McGlynn broke the 20-year-old school record in the decathlon and set the top score in the NCAA early this outdoor season on Friday at the Aztec Invitational.
Â
McGlynn (Stephen, Minn.) scored 7,697 points, breaking Andrew Aakre's NDSU record of 7,641 from 2005.
Â
Following a career-best opening day on Thursday, McGlynn recorded personal-best performances in all five events on Friday. He clocked 14.78 in the 110m hurdles, threw 129-6 (39.49m) in the discus, cleared 16-08.75 (5.10m) in the pole vault, threw 141-3 (43.05m) in the javelin, and capped the meet with a time of 4:53.23 in the 1500m.
Â
McGlynn's mark in the pole vault also tied him for seventh-best in NDSU outdoor history in that event.
Â
Based on past seasons' NCAA performance lists, McGlynn's score would have qualified him for every NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships under the current format.

Bison senior
Bryce Enerson also set a personal-best in the decathlon alongside McGlynn, scoring 6,609 points to take second in the meet. It was a 498-point improvement over his previous best decathlon, as Enerson registered new personal-best marks in six out of the 10 events.
