DELAND, Fla. – The North Dakota State baseball team came up short against No. 22 Virginia, 5-4, on Sunday morning at Melching Field in rainy conditions.
Diego Trujillo put the Bison (1-7) on the board with an RBI ground out in the first inning to score
Cal Jones to make the score 1-0. Following a scoreless second frame, AJ Garcia responded for Virginia (6-1) with a two-run home run to steal the lead, 2-1, in the third.
Noah Gordon tied the game, 2-2, for the Bison in the fourth inning with an RBI single to left field.
After a brief weather delay in the sixth,
Caleb Corbin smashed his first triple as a Bison into centerfield. The two RBI triple put the Bison in front, 4-2. However, the Cavaliers then plated one run in each of the next three innings capped off by a home run off the bat of Kyle Johnson in the eighth to seal the 5-4 win.
The Bison notched six hits as a team with Corbin going 2-of-4 at the plate with two RBI.
Jonah Walker made the start on the mound tossing six strikeouts with two runs, two walks and three hits across 5.0 innings.
Braden Gluth also provided two strikeouts over 1.1 innings of relief.
NDSU will be back in action to open up a three-game series at Missouri on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
