BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State wrestling upset No. 19 South Dakota State Sunday afternoon to reclaim the Border Bell trophy with a 20-13 victory at First Bank & Trust Arena.
Trailing with three matches to go, North Dakota State (8-9, 4-4 Big 12) rallied, including a top-5 upset from
Devin Wasley, to win the final three matches and claim the rivalry trophy back from the Jackrabbits (12-5, 4-4 Big 12).
The Bison started strong, as #21
Ezekiel Witt recorded an upset of #20 Brady Roark, scoring five takedowns in a major decision, winning 17-6 to give NDSU an early lead.
South Dakota State responded with a sudden victory win and then another win by decision to take a 6-4 lead, but NDSU followed it up with a pair of wins. At 149 pounds, #16
Max Petersen picked up more bonus points for NDSU with another major decision, defeating Colin Dupill 16-7.
The Bison extended the lead at the end of the first half with another upset win, as
Gavin Drexler scored the only takedown and added a reversal in a 6-3 win over #17 Cael Swensen.
After South Dakota State scored a major decision and a decision in the next two matches to take the lead, #28
Aidan Brenot picked up an 8-2 decision over Jarrett Wadsen to give NDSU a 14-13 lead that it would not relinquish.
In the match of the day, #24
Devin Wasley then secured a pair of takedowns to upset #5 Bennett Berge 9-5 to put the Bison in control of the dual.
With NDSU leading 17-13,
Shilo Jones capped off the dual with another upset victory, as he used two takedowns and a reversal to top #33 Luke Rasmussen 10-6 and secure victory for the Bison.
The NDSU win snaps a four-dual losing skid to South Dakota State and the Bison improve to 16-9-1 in the Division I era against the Jackrabbits. NDSU improves their lead in the all-time series to 46-26-1.
Following the win over South Dakota State, the Bison will shift focus to postseason tournament play, as NDSU heads to the Big 12 Wrestling Championships March 6-7. The Big 12 Championships will be held at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
