Derrick Lang Named Deputy Director of Athletics at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State University director of athletics Matt Larsen today announced the hiring of Derrick Lang as NDSU's new deputy director of athletics. Lang is replacing Todd Phelps, who resigned in June to become the director of athletics at Middlebury College.
In addition to the daily responsibilities as Deputy AD, Lang will continue to oversee all fundraising for the athletic department plus oversight of external operations and sport supervision for men's basketball and women's volleyball.
"Derrick has been a major part of Bison Athletics for the past 17 years as a football student-athlete, marketing and corporate sales assistant, and most recently our lead fundraiser and liaison to Team Makers," Larsen said. "Derrick is well respected both within the athletic department and across the greater community and fanbase. He has a true passion for NDSU and in serving our student-athletes. I am excited for this next step in his career."
NDSU will begin a national search immediately for a new senior associate athletic director for development to replace Lang, who has served as the Team Makers executive director since 2019 and was elevated to executive associate athletic director in 2024.
"I have been incredibly fortunate to serve NDSU Athletics in a variety of different roles throughout my career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our student-athletes in this new role," Lang said. "Over the past six years with Team Makers, I've had the privilege of building meaningful relationships with our donors, fans and alumni. Seeing firsthand their passion for NDSU strengthened my appreciation for what makes this place so special. My family and I are thankful that Matt Larsen has provided us with this opportunity and we are excited for what is ahead. I look forward to working alongside our coaches, staff, student-athletes and supporters as I transition into this new role."
Lang graduated from NDSU in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in business management and earned a master's degree in sport management at Northern Illinois in 2015. He and his wife, Alex, reside in West Fargo with their three sons.
