NDSU Volleyball Edges St. Thomas to Open Summit League Play, 3-2

FARGO, N.D. – Lauren Jansen and Zoe John combined for 45 kills to help power the North Dakota State volleyball team past St. Thomas, 3-2, on Thursday night at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Bison pushed their win streak to five matches and improved to 9-2 (1-0 Summit) on the season. St. Thomas drops to 2-8 (0-1 Summit) with the loss.
John recorded a career-best and match-high 23 kills to go along with a .381 hitting percentage. Jansen tied a career-best 22 kills with 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. The Plainfield, Ill., native also added a match-best and season-high four service aces to her stat line. Sarah Pfiffner closed out the top performers and handed out a career-high 44 assists with 12 digs for her team-best fifth double-double of the season.
After splitting the first two frames, both teams worked through a match-high seven tie scores and three lead changes in the third set until the Bison put together three straight points to grab a 22-21 lead after a pair of kills from Jansen. The Tommies answered to close to the set on a 4-1 run of their own to win the frame, 25-23.
NDSU pushed back in the fourth set with six unanswered points to open up an early 6-2 lead with a kill from Emma Tallman. The Bison then doubled up the Tommies, 14-7, after Sadie Johnson delivered an ace. NDSU held off St. Thomas the rest of the way to win the set, 25-19.
The Tommies were able to build a 12-9 lead in the fifth set following a kill from Anya Schmidt. The Bison then took advantage of three straight attack errors to lock the frame, 12-12. NDSU went on to close the set with three more unanswered points, including a clutch ace from Jansen to win the frame, 15-12, and the match, 3-1.
NDSU will continue Summit League play hosting Omaha on Saturday. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
