Kelli Layman is in her 22nd year as an assistant coach at North Dakota State University. She was promoted to associate head coach in 2005-06.
"It’s not by chance that we’ve had success with that continuity," said North Dakota State head coach Amy Ruley. "It’s like having two head coaches. Each person has their responsibilities, knows what they have to do and where it fits in the whole picture."
Layman has proven to be a vital component in the success achieved by the NDSU women’s basketball program. She is involved in all phases of the NDSU women’s basketball from coordinating scouting and recruiting, in addition to her on-court coaching responsibilities.
A 1984 graduate of Purdue University, Layman was a four-year regular on the Boilermakers’ basketball team. During her career, she was co-captain her senior year and also earned the Red Mackey Award for dedication and loyalty to the program. Layman was named Purdue’s best defensive player as a sophomore and junior, and co-captain her senior year.
In addition, Layman served as a graduate assistant at Purdue. Her primary duties included recruiting and academic supervising of all women’s basketball players.
A native of New Paris, Ind., she received her bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in biology. She earned her master’s degree in biomechanics from Purdue in 1986.
