In Dunn's first season in Fargo, he coached freshman setter Monica Claxton to Summit League All-Freshman Team honors. The Bison claimed three of the seven spots on the league's freshman squad.

Dunn came to North Dakota State after one year at Washington University in St. Louis, where the Bears went 31-4 and were NCAA regional runners-up.

He spent the 2011 season at West Virginia after two years at Alabama, where he was a volunteer assistant in 2009 and assistant coach in 2010.  He broke into coaching as a student assistant at Lindenwood University from 2003-2007 and was a graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas in 2008.

Dunn was a setter and blocking specialist during his playing days at Lindenwood from 2003-07.  He captained the 2006 team that was ranked No. 1 nationally and helped the Lions advance to two NAIA national semifinals and two national championship matches.

A four-time academic all-conference honoree, Dunn earned a bachelor's degree in history and business administration from Lindenwood in May 2008.
