
North Dakota State Women Strong at Start, Strong at Finish to Sidetrack Bulldogs 66-50

KINGSVILLE, Texas--The North Dakota State University women's basketball team was strong at the start and strong at the finish as the Bison turned back Southwestern Oklahoma State University 66-50 in the opening game of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Turkey Day Shootout played Thursday, Nov. 25, at The Steinke Center.
North Dakota State (3-0) is scheduled to play St. Edward's University (Texas) at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 26, in the second day of the tournament.
Katie Lorenz sparked both the offense and defense as the Bison started the game with a 13-0 run as Southwestern Oklahoma State (2-2) went without a field goal for the first six minutes. NDSU led by as many as 16 points in the first half, taking a 24-8 lead with 9:47 left on a Brenda Slyt 3-pointer.
The Bulldogs rallied behind Paige Adams, who scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half, and Bethanie Bentz, who scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. NDSU led 32-27 at halftime, but Southwestern Oklahoma State went on a 7-2 run to start the second half to tie the score at 34-all.
Lorenz, a 5-foot-8 junior from Langdon, N.D., finished with a game-high 18 points and career-high 11 rebounds to record her first collegiate "daily double". She also had five assists.
Lorenz started NDSU's closing statement a conventional three-point play on a fastbreak, hitting a layup and free throw that put the North Dakota State ahead 56-50 with 6:18 left. The Bison closing statement was convincing and included several alert defensive plays from Amanda Krenz, Brandee Gibbs and Lacey Johnson. The Bison held Southwestern Oklahoma State without a point in the game's final six minutes during another 13-0 run.
Leah Klabo and Johnson each added nine points. Both teams shot under 35-percent for the contest. North Dakota State held a 52-36 advantage in rebounds. Kayla Dahlen connected on career best 2 of 5 three-pointers and finished with eight points and five rebounds.
