Box Score FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State won the first game but lost the next three straight to Wisconsin-Green Bay as the Phoenix defeated the Bison in the final match of the Doublewood Inn Classic college women's volleyball tournament 29-31, 34-32, 30-17, 30-21 on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Bison Sports Arena.
North Dakota State struck first, taking the first game with a nailbiting 31-29 victory. The Bison were down 25-20 in the second set then made a strong comeback to tie it up late but the Phoenix held on in extra time winning the set 34-32. Wisconsin-Green Bay went on and took the next two sets from the Bison.
For the third time in four matches, North Dakota State (0-10) outblocked its opponent, this time by a 13 to 10 margin. Christy Stuewe notched one solo block and six block assists while teammate Kelly Kaufmann also contributed six block assists.
Wisconsin-Green Bay (4-5) received 20 kills and 13 digs from all-tournament selection Jackie Rosen. Four other Phoenix players also racked up double-digit kills.
Kelly Lopez led the offensive and defensive attack with 15 kills and 16 digs for the Bison. Following close behind were all-tournament selection Kim Hebl with 13 kills and Lindsay Shockman-Rogers with 10.
WIth Lopez, three other Bison registered double-digit digs. Kari Fagnan had 15 digs, Hebl had 11 and Chloe Quirk notched 10 digs in the contest.
Along with Rosen, Sarah Rauen and Betty Slinger each posted double-digit digs for Wisconsin-Green Bay with 22 and 15, respectively. Slinger was also effective passing the ball with a match-high 57 assists.
North Dakota State finished the tournament 0-4 and Wisconsin-Green Bay was 2-2.
The Bison have a rematch with the Phoenix on Friday, Sept. 15, in their first match at the Wisconsin-Green Bay AmeriHost Inn Classic.
