NEWARK, N.J.--The North Dakota State women's soccer team scored 12 goals, the most team goals scored since becoming a Division I school, in a neutral match against Howard University on Sunday, Oct. 30.
Jestina Orlando opened the scoring for NDSU with a rolling ball to the right side of the net in the 22nd minute. Orlando was fed by Ashley Dement in a two-versus-one situation. Laura Murphy and Kelsey Hohol got their first goals of the season in the 27th and 29th minute.
Unassisted, Murphy scored with a shot played off of a corner kick which found its way through a crowd of players and into the net. Hohol's strike, assisted by Michelle Martinez, snuck by to the left of diving Howard goalkeeper DeLaine Anderson.
Martinez added a pair of goals in the 31st and 39th minute, sandwiched between a successful kick by Lorraine Thompson in the 38th minute to end the first period with a 6-0 NDSU lead.
Nicole Rand, Sarah Panzer and Danielle Thompson notched second-half scores. Lorraine Thompson tallied two more goals and Martinez added a third for the pair to each record a hat trick. In all, eight different players scored for NDSU en route to its second highest goal total in school history. The Bison recorded 14 goals against Bemidji State on Oct. 12, 1997 to set the school mark.
“It was good to see players getting into the scoring column today and being able to put a few players in new positions,” NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said.
Monica Morgan stopped five shots for the win. She was relieved by Chelsea Body in the 78th minute. Body denied one shot in her first collegiate appearance in goal. The duo combined for a shutout, NDSU's seventh of the season.
The Bison will play New Jersey Tech on Monday at Lubetkin Field with a kickoff of 7 p.m. ET. It will be the first time since 2004 the Bison will play games in consecutive days.
“Tomorrow will help us get prepared for next weekend at the United Soccer Tournament,” Cuadrado said, “where we will have to play three games in four days to earn a championship.”
