BISON INVITE: In the first of two home events for North Dakota State, the Bison men's track & field team scored a sweep in the javelin throw and gathered wins in eight events at the Bison Invitational on Saturday, April 8.
Chad Oukrop led the way for the Bison in the javelin throw. Oukrop unleashed a 204-11 for the event win. Riley Dolezal followed with a mark of 199-3 and Andrew Mauch collected a third-place finish with a 181-0. The marks represented season bests for Dolezal and Mauch, while Oukrop tossed a 211-5 at the Bobby Lane Texas-Arlington Invitational on April 1.
Throwing his way to a pair of victories, RJ Gross recorded season-best distances in both the shot and the hammer. Gross was measured at 50-0 in the shot put and 152-9 in the hammer throw. His previous best outputs this year were 47-9 1/4 and 149-11.
Brad Hartsoch and Matt Bishoff also established wins in the field events. Hartsoch scored a personal record in the long jump with a 21-6 3/4, while Bishoff upped his career outdoor best in the high jump to 6-4.
On the track, Eric Palmquist dominated the 800-meter run with a 1:56.03 and Jedd Danielson used a surge on the home stretch to pull away for the win in the 1,500 with a time of 4:04.71.
NDSU TRACK ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Each week NDSU coaches will select three members of the track & field team to be NDSU track & field athletes of the week. The coaches will select a track athlete of the week, a field athlete of the week and also select a winner of the Andrew Aakre Award, given to an athlete who exemplifies Bison athletics through competition and spirit.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: NDSU replaced the University of Wisconsin Twilight meet in Madison on May 6 with the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, S.D., on May 5-6.
TEXAS: North Dakota State's Jake Januszewski and James Schanandore led the Bison track & field team by placing first and second in the 5,000-meter run at the University of Texas-Arlington's Bobby Lane Invitational on Saturday, April 1.
Januszewski cruised to a comfortable win with a time of 15:16.03 while Schanandore took runner-up honors with a time of 15:23.70. Emporia State's Eric Wellman placed third in 16:08.09.
Januszewski provided another second-place run for the Bison when he crossed the line in 9:30.44 in the steeplechase, only trailing the event winning time of 9:23.98 by Louisiana-Monroe's Maya Aden.
Chad Oukrop led the Bison field event competitors with a runner-up performance in the javelin. With a toss of 211-5, Oukrop approached his career mark of 217-3 set last year at the Howard Wood Relays. Northwestern State's Cody Fillinich won the javelin with a mark of 214-7.
Other individual top-10 results included Eric Palmquist (8th, 1:55.25) and Todd Schmidt (9th, 1:55.94) in the 800, Shawn Francis (8th, 15-7 1/4) and Matt Bishoff (14-1 1/4) in the pole vault and RJ Gross in the shot put (7th, 47-9 1/4) and the hammer throw (7th, 143-11).
MIAMI RECAP: The Bison opened its outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami on March 16-18.
Chad Oukrop recorded the highest finish for NDSU with a third-place result in the javelin throw. With a mark of 193-8, Oukrop was able to fend off teammates Riley Dolezal (4th, 190-4) and Andrew Mauch (6th, 178-8) to give the Bison three top finishes in the event.
On the track, the Bison were led by Jedd Danielson's fourth-place finish in the 800. The senior clocked in at 1:53.25 for the two-lap event. Todd Schmidt followed with a ninth-place 1:55.28.
Sophomore sprinter Ben Hendricks dipped under 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash by crossing the line in 10.97 for seventh place, Jayce Miller cracked 50 seconds in the 400 with an eighth-place 49.71 and redshirt freshman James Schanandore broke four minutes in the 1,500 with a 3:59.20 for sixth place.
After resting in fourth place after the first day of competition, redshirt freshman Matt Bishoff fell to fifth place in the decathlon with a score of 6,631.
BERGAN BREAKS 24-YEAR-OLD RECORD: Chad Bergan, in his third season of indoor track at NDSU, broke one of the oldest school records in the books at the University of Nebraska's Frank Sevigne Invitational on Feb. 4.
Bergan completed the 1,000-meter run in a time of 2:26.12, shaving exactly one-half of a second off of Rob Carney's mark of 2:26.62 set in 1982, two years before Bergan was born. Jedd Danielson also cracked Carney's mark with a 2:26.40, placing the senior No. 2 on NDSU's all-time indoor performance list in the event.
Missouri's Christian Smith, the eventual 2006 NCAA indoor champion in the mile, won the 1,000 with a United States leading time of 2:19.57.
2004-05 RECAP: In the program's first year at the Division I level, the Bison put together a dominating performance at the Division I independent championships in Davis, Calif. NDSU claimed eight individual titles and two relay golds en route to a tally of 245 1/2 points to runner-up UC Davis' score of 171.
Three indoor and two outdoor school records were established in 2005. Marques Johnson cruised to a 34.21 in the rarely run 300-meter dash. Reece Vega set a 600-meter run record with a 1:19.79 at the Minnesota Open. The duo teamed up with Allen Burrell and Jared Essler to form a school record setting 1,600-meter relay which posted a 3:10.24 at Notre Dame.
During the outdoor season, John Christensen upped his personal and school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 192-5 while the Bison 800-meter relay team cruised to a 1:24.06 at the Drake Relays to break the old mark of 1:24.21 from the 2004 season.
HOMEGROWN TALENT: The 2006 men's roster includes nine athletes out of the Fargo-Moorhead area. Fargo South leads the group with three (Matt Bishoff, Ben Hendricks, Jayten Shook), followed by Fargo North (Brad Hartsoch, Derrick Yates) and Moorhead (Michael Hagan, Austin Volla) with two and West Fargo (Scott Johnson) and Shanley (Paul Lindquist) with one student-athlete each.
SCHILLING SHINES: North Dakota State University freshman Ross Schilling placed sixth in the 800-meter run at the 2005 USA Junior Outdoor Championships on June 24.
Seeded eighth in the race with an entry time of 1:52.01 from the Jim Bush Invitational on June 5, Schilling ran a two-lap 1:52.78. Karjuan Williams, competing for the New Orleans Comets, won the race with a 1:50.88.
THE RECLASSIFICATION: North Dakota State is in its third year of a five-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I... The Bison will not be eligible for NCAA playoffs until the 2008-09 season in any sport except wrestling and women's volleyball, which become tournament eligible in 2006-07... NDSU's football program competes at the Division I-AA level and is a charter member of the Great West Football Conference (formed in 2004), and women's soccer was accepted into the United Soccer Conference for the 2006 season.
INDEPENDENTS: After years of excellence in the North Central Conference at the Division II level, the 2005 season will mark North Dakota State's second year at the Division I Independent Championships. Northern Colorado will host this year's competition in Greeley on May 13-14.
COACHING STAFF: Don Larson will lead the Bison men's team for the 27th straight season. In his seventh season of duty at NDSU, head women's coach Ryun Godfrey will handle the middle distance and distance crews. Stevie Keller, a 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier in the decathlon, returns for his sixth year with the program. Keller will work with the pole vault, javelin and the multi-events. A four-time All-American from Michigan State, Desire'e Larson will focus on the high jumpers. Eric Butery returns to assist in the throws. NDSU All-Americans Brent Parmer and Allen Burrell round out the coaching staff. Palmer will assist with the long and triple jumps, while Burrell will spend time in the sprinting events and relays.
