Balanced South Dakota State Rolls Past North Dakota State 86-51

BROOKINGS, S.D.--Megan Vogel scored 17 points to lead a group of five players in double-figures as South Dakota State defeated North Dakota State 86-51 in a Division I independent women's basketball game played Friday, Feb. 23, before a crowd of 4,132 at Frost Arena.

North Dakota State (12-11) is scheduled to close out the 2007 season at New Jersey Tech (4-21) and IPFW (12-14) next week. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Bison. SDSU won its 10th straight game and swept the series with NDSU for the second straight season.

South Dakota State (21-5) reeled off 10 unanswered points to break open a close game midway in the first half. The game was tied four times and the lead changed hands on eight occasions.

The Bison had taken a 19-14 lead with 10:20 left on the second of three-pointers by Lisa Bue. Bue scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half. She was held to nine points in the first meeting with SDSU.

However, NDSU went scoreless for over four minutes and a Courtney Grimsrud free throw put the Jackrabbits ahead 24-19 with 7:27 left. Grimsrud finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds as SDSU held a 58-38 advantage on the glass.

Emily Moran knocked down a three-point that drew the Bison to within 24-22 with 6:38 remaining, but it was close as the score would be for the remainder of the contest. Moran scored 13 points for NDSU. South Dakota State led 44-27 at halftime.

North Dakota State opened the second half with a 13-3 run to cut the deficit to 47-40 with 13:15 left on an Amanda Girodat three-pointer, but had to endure another scoring drought that last nearly six minutes.

South Dakota State reeled off 23 answered points during that stretch including a pair of Vogel three-pointers as the advantage ballooned to 70-40 before Girodat hit a short jumper in the lane.

South Dakota State shot 43.1 percent from the field compared to 26.1 percent for NDSU. The Jackrabbits also hit 22 of 28 free throws for 78.6 percent compared to 10 of 15 for 67 percent for the Bison. The teams combined for 41 turnovers, but SDSU turned 20 North Dakota State turnovers into 26 points.
