NDSU's Tyler Roehl Among College Sporting News National Player of the Week Honorees

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University senior quarterback Nick Hill, North Dakota State University junior running back Tyler Roehl, James Madison University senior linebacker Justin Barnes and the tandem of Prairie View A&M University junior safety Vallice Ford and junior cornerback Riante Jonesare the recipients of CSN national Football Championship Subdivision honors for the week ending Sept. 10.
Each of the honorees are listed here with their achievements and their school, position, height, weight, class and hometown:
Nick Hill, Southern Illinois, QB, 6-3, 210, Sr., DuQuoin, Ill.
Hill was the offensive sparkplug that powered the Southern Illinois
offense to a 31-28 victory over FBS rival Northern Illinois in the 43rd
meeting of these old rivals. The Salukis lit up the scoreboard with 20
unanswered fourth-quarter points, and Hill guided Southern Illinois to
two touchdowns in the final 61 seconds of the game, including the
go-ahead touchdown with 22 seconds left. On the day, Hill went 22 for
31 passing with 238 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, while guiding the
Salukis to convert on four of six fourth-down conversions.
Tyler Roehl, North Dakota State, RB, 5-10, 233, Jr., West Fargo, N.D.
Roehl became the first Bison running back to run for over 200 yards
since North Dakota State joined the ranks of Division I football. In a
28-17 victory over Stephen F. Austin, he rushed 27 times for 238 yards
and 3 touchdowns, making up the bulk of the Bison scoring and providing
much-needed stability in a turnover-filled day. Incredibly, this was
Roehl's first-ever start at tailback in college, having amassed a grand
total of 28 yards rushing with 10 carries in his first two years of
college eligibility. His 238-yard effort was second best in Great West
Football Conference history.
Justin Barnes, James Madison, LB, 6-2, 215, Sr., Columbia, MD.
Barnes registered 19 tackles in the College Sporting News' "Game of the
Week" as James Madison outlasted last year's Payton Award winning
quarterback Ricky Santos and the rest of the New Hampshire Wildcats
41-23. Barnes had 10 solo stops and one tackle for loss, and was a
leader of a defense that forced two key second-half interceptions that
led to the Dukes' victory. Overall, his leadership on a team that held
the Wildcats to 79 yards rushing on the evening allowed James Madison
to gut out a wild victory.
Vallice Ford, Prairie View A&M, S, 6-1, 190, Jr., Canton
Springs, Md., Riante Jones, Prairie View A&M, CB, 6-0, 180, Jr.,
Brandywine, MD.
Ford and Jones earned co-special teams honors this week after their
performance in the Angel City Football Classic in Los Angeles, CA. In
the Panthers' 22-7 victory over North Carolina A&T, Jones blocked
three kicks, two of which were blocked punts returned for touchdowns by
Ford. Jones ended three straight N.C. A&T possessions at the
beginning of the second quarter by blocking Aggie kicks. The first was
a punt blocked by Jones at the Aggie 20 yard line, while Ford scrambled
after the loose ball and scampered in for the score. Then Jones would
successfully block an Aggie field goal try and return the blocked kick
10 yards. Finally, Jones made an incredible third straight block after
he deflected a punt at the Aggie three yard line, and Ford took the
blocked punt in full stride and walked into the end zone for his second
touchdown on the day. With Ford tacking on a late safety after tackling
North Carolina A&T's David "Speedy" Robinson in the end zone and
Jones forcing a fumble to end the final Aggie drive, Jones and Ford
could say that they were directly responsible for 14 of the Panthers'
22 points on the day.
