That list also included North Dakota State senior linebacker Joe Mays, who made his first appearance on the watch list ... Mays was tied for the NDSU lead with 67 tackles including a team best 38 solo stops and 5.0 tackles for loss. He added three pass breakups, two sacks and a forced fumble ... The Bison defense held nine of 11 opponents to 100 yards or less rushing during the 2006 season ... NDSU was fourth in rushing defense (67.2 ypg), eighth in scoring defense (13.4 ppg), ninth in total defense (253.64 ypg) ... He received votes in the 2006 Payton Award balloting after being added midseason ... Walker completed 185 of 288 passes (64.2%) for 2,220 yards and 16 TDs to lead the Bison to their highest regular season national ranking (4th) since the move to Division I ... His four interceptions in 2006 was a Great West low among starting quarterbacks ... Walker is within 64 yards of the program's all-time record. He looks to add to the NDSU's career pass completions, attempts and touchdown marks.

WALKER NO. 7 ON THE RETURNING QUARTERBACK LIST: North Dakota State senior Steve Walker is No. 7 on the returning quarterback list put together by The Sports Network. Walker was rated No. 17 as a junior and mentioned as one of five to watch as a sophomore. TSN's Football Championship Subdivision editor Matt Dougherty wrote, "Walker's case shows why numbers and statistics don't always tell the whole story. Sure, he has a lot to be proud of in that regard. Walker threw for 2,220 yards with 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions in 2006, and completed 64 percent of his passes. While North Dakota State is not included in season-ending NCAA statistics during its transition, Walker's passing efficiency rating of 144.5 would have rated 16th in the nation." ... Dougherty continued, "But with a team that dominated with strong running game and defense for the past two seasons, Walker's statistics are often an afterthought. His clutch performances are not, and Walker has come up big when he needs to throughout his career. In rare instances when the Bison were challenged in last year's 10-1 campaign, Walker threw for 451 yards and three touchdowns in a 29-24 win at FBS Ball State and tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass with four seconds to play as the Bison rallied from 24 points down at halftime to win at UC Davis, 28-24. Walker has 4,706 yards with 40 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions in his career, and he will be counted on to expand on those numbers as the Bison compensate for the loss of running back Kyle Steffes."
DRAGOSAVICH, SAFE, MAYS RANK HIGH IN FCS POSITION RANKINGS: The preseason magazines are coming out, and the polls and All-America teams will follow shortly ... Maybe summer is just past the halfway point, but the rabid football fans can already smell the Labor Day weekend tailgates and visits to FBS heavyweights on the horizon ... The Sports Network's preseason player rankings ... North Dakota State's Mike Dragosavich is listed as No. 1 punter, Nate Safe is No. 2 among offensive tackles and linebacker Joe Mays is No. 5 in his position group. Bison quarterback Steve Walker was listed at No. 7 in a look at the quarterbacks earlier this summer ... "Dragosavich rarely had to see the field for the Bison," wrote Dougherty, "but he made the most of his 30 punts by averaging 46.2 yards per kick and placing 14 balls inside the 20." ... He continued, "Safe was widely considered the best player on a stellar Bison offensive line that played a significant role in the team's 10-1 season." ... Regarding the NDSU senior middle linebacker Dougherty said, "The numbers weren't extraordinary because of the overall dominance of the defense up front, but Mays turned in a quality season with 67 tackles, five tackles for a loss and two sacks."

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN FALLS TO TARLETON STATE: For the second consecutive season the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team dropped its home opener to an NCAA Division II opponent, falling to Tarleton State, 27-24. Texan kicker Stephen Arnold drilled a 37-yard field goal in overtime to hand TSU its second-straight victory to start the season, while the ?Jacks open the year 0-1.
Adding injury to insult, the Lumberjacks had to go the majority of the game without services of preseason all-conference running back Louie Runnels who went down in the first quarter with an injury. Making matters more severe for the ?Jacks, backup running back Vincent Pervis left the game in the second quarter with an injury and did not return.
Despite the loss of its first and second-team running backs, SFA controlled the ground game carrying the ball 28 times for 129 yards in the first half. Preseason all-conference quarterback Danny Southall picked up the slack carrying the ball 11 times for 30 in the opening half, and completing 13-of-16 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns. SFA rallied from an early 7-0 deficit to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.
The ?Jacks seemed to heading into the locker room with all the momentum, but it was Tarleton State that came out on fire scoring 17 unanswered points in the second half to build a seven-point advantage, 24-17, late in the fourth quarter.
TSU quarterback Scott Grantham completed 16-of-21 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Texans' attack. Roderick Smith was elusive out of the TSU backfield avoiding tacklers, and finishing the game with 109 yards on 23 carries.
Despite being down seven with only 3:25 remaining, Southall and company mounted one final charge. Southall guided the ?Jacks on a seven-play, 80-yard drive that ended in a nine-yard TD run by Southall. After a Cory Long added the extra point to tie the game, it was up to the SFA defense. SFA held on defense after Arnold missed a 47-yard field goal to guarantee overtime.
TSU won the coin toss and elected to play defense first, and it was a decision that would pay off. The ?Jacks fumbled the ball on their opening drive of the extra period, and the Texans went for the field goal on fourth down to ice the victory.
The ?Jacks finished the night with 435 yards of total offense, including 251 yards on the ground. Southall completed 18-of-30 passes on the night for 184 yards, and one touchdown, while rushing for 113 yards and another score.
