
Western Illinois Hands North Dakota State Third Straight Loss, 83-67

MACOMB, Ill.--David Nurse hit all four of his 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to lead Western Illinois to an 83-67 victory over North Dakota State in Summit League men's basketball Saturday, Jan. 12.
Nurse had 11 first-half points to lead Western Illinois to a 35-32 halftime lead. He hit a pair of 3-pointers on a 10-2 run that gave the Leathernecks a 30-22 lead with 4:38 before the break.
North Dakota State (8-9, 2-4) scored the first eight points of the second half to go ahead 40-35, but the Leathernecks (8-8, 3-2) came back to tie the game at 45 behind two David Jackson baskets and two free throws.
It was tied at 49 before James Washington scored a pair of fast-break baskets to fuel a 13-4 Western Illinois run to go ahead 62-53.
NDSU was no closer than five the rest of the way in losing its third straight game.
Jackson finished with 20 points as Western Illinois shot 56 percent (29-for-52) and put four players in double figures. Jerryck Owens-Murrey had 14 points and Washington finished with 12.
Ben Woodside led North Dakota State with 22 points, including 9 of 11 free throws. Woodside also had a game-high seven rebounds as NDSU outrebounded Western Illinois 31-28.
Brett Winkelman had 16 points and Mike Nelson had 15 as the Bison shot 44 percent (20-for-46).
The teams combined to shoot 60 free throws. NDSU was 25 of 33 and the Leathernecks were 18 of 27.
North Dakota State returns home to host Southern Utah at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Bison Sports Arena. The Thunderbirds lost 63-60 at UMKC on Saturday night and dropped to 4-12 overall, 2-3 in The Summit League.
