
Nelson Scores 1,000th as Oakland Snaps NDSU's 16-Game Home Winning Streak, 73-71

FARGO, N.D. (AP)--Tim Williams' jumper with two seconds lifted Oakland University over North Dakota State 73-71 Saturday in Summit League men's basketball.
Williams finished with six points for the Golden Grizzlies (8-7, 3-1), who shot 48 percent from the field to snap NDSU's 16-game home winning streak before a crowd of 3,593 at the Bison Sports Arena.
Johnathon Jones and Brandon Cassise scored 21 points apiece to lead Oakland. Will Hudson chipped in 11 points.
Ben Woodside and Mike Nelson each had 17 points to lead NDSU. Woodside's 3-pointer to win it at the buzzer missed wide left.
Nelson finished the night with 1,002 career points, becoming the 27th NDSU player to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
NDSU (8-7, 2-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead. It was the largest lead by either team in the first half. Oakland led 34-33 at the break.
The game was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands 11 times.
The game remained close with Oakland taking a 59-52 lead on a layup by Hudson with 7:16 to play, but the Bison quickly shaved that back to three points.
Neither team led by more than three points in the last five minutes.
Cassise drained a 3-pointer with a minute remaining to tie the game 70-70, and he broke the tie with a free throw with :58 left.
NDSU tied it at 71-71 on a free throw by Woodside with 42 seconds to play. Woodside was 11-for-13 at the line.
Brett Winkelman had 14 points for NDSU and matched center Lucas Moormann with six rebounds apiece.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play at IUPUI next Thursday, Jan. 10, and at Western Illinois next Saturday, Jan. 12.
