Bison Drop Heartbreaker to Oral Roberts in Double-Overtime

FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State soccer team lost a tough contest to Oral Roberts today, 3-2, in double overtime. Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the second half, the Bison were unable to hold on for the victory. NDSU falls to 4-8-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Summit League. Oral Roberts is now 4-6-1 and 1-1 in the Summit League.
The Bison dominated early possession and Candice D'Arcangeli got the shooting started, but Golden Eagle goalie Amanda Wheeler was up to the task. Michelle Gaffaney and Lorraine Thompson also fired early shots that were saved.
On a counterattack, Oral Roberts' Correne Walker beat her defender and a sprawling Kalani Bertsch to put the Golden Eagles on top, 1-0, in the 16th minute.
Oral Roberts had a chance to make it 2-0 after Walker was taken down in the box and earned a penalty kick. Tara Lomas took the kick, but goalie Kalani Bertsch made a diving save to keep the score at 1-0.
The Bison were able to tie the game at 1-1 towards the end of the half. Freshman Laura Wagner notched the first goal of her career when she scooped the ball over the goalie off an assist from D'Arcangeli.
In the second half, the Bison had several good chances get away from them. In the 50th minute, Thompson's shot was touched just wide by the Oral Roberts keeper. Off the ensuing corner kick, Gaffaney's header went just over the crossbar. In the 57th minute, D'Arcangeli's shot was also sent just wide by the keeper.
Freshman Danielle Boldenow capitalized for the Bison in the 61st minute. Quin Ryan crossed the ball into the middle of the box and Nicole Rand touched it to Boldenow who knocked it in to give the Bison a 2-1 lead.
Eight minutes later, Oral Roberts tied the game at 2-2 when Kaycie Porter headed in a free kick from Tara Lomas.
NDSU had a final chance in regulation in the 85th minute, but D'Arcangeli sent the ball over the bar. A shot by Oral Roberts' Porter in the 89th minute went well wide.
In the first overtime period, Rand got her foot on the ball in front of the goal, but the ORU keeper again made the save. Oral Roberts' Tara Lomas then had two consecutive shots saved by Bertsch. A final shot by Thompson was saved.
Oral Roberts scored the game winning goal 2 minutes and 28 seconds into the second overtime period when Lomas put in a header from Lorena Soto.
The Bison return to the Ellig Sports Complex on Sunday when they play host to Centenary at 1 p.m.
