FARGO, N.D. - After falling in a 3-0 hole to Seattle in the first half, the North Dakota State soccer team fought back in the second half to cut the Redhawks' lead to just one goal but ran out of time to complete the comeback. With the 3-2 loss, the Bison fall to 5-9-2 on the season while Seattle improves to 8-3-3.
Seattle scored all three of their goals in an eight minute span in the beginning of the first half. After maintaining much of the possession from the start of the game, the Redhawks earned a corner kick in the 10th minute and Jamie Coe headed home the ball to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Jordan Salisbury put in a long cross and Kassandra Riozzi was there to head in the goal. Riozzi struck again in the 18th minute when her corner kick found it's way to the back of the net.
The Bison struggled to maintain possession and create chances in the first half. Seattle got off two more shots before halftime, but Kalani Bertsch made the saves.
The second half was a completely different story. The Bison put immediate pressure on the Redhawks when Lorraine Thompson's 46th minute shot ricocheted off the post. This was followed by shots from Marissa Wolfgram and Quin Ryan.
Ryan found the back of the net in the 52nd minute when she let loose from 25 yards out, sending the ball up and over the goalie's head. Her third goal of the year cut the Seattle lead to two.
The Bison continued to pressure the Seattle defense as another shot by Ryan hit the post and went out of bounds.
NDSU converted that pressure to another goal when Thompson ripped a low shot from the top of the box. Freshman Danielle Boldenow assisted on the goal.
With the score at 3-2 in favor of Seattle, the intensity picked up even more. Seattle had a couple counterattack chances and Megan Fogerty hit the crossbar, but that was the closest they would come again to scoring.
Down by one, the Bison were pushing for the tying game, but the Seattle defense tightened, only allowing Thompson to take two more shots, both of which went high. In the last three minutes of the game, NDSU had three corner kick opportunities, but were unable to convert.
The Bison return to the Ellig Sports Complex on Monday, Oct. 20 for a 3 p.m. game against Summit League foe South Dakota State. Monday's game will also be Senior Day for Bison forward Nicole Rand.
