#4/6 Northern Iowa Strikes Early In 23-13 Win Over #16/20 North Dakota State at UNI-Dome

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa--No. 4/6-ranked Northern Iowa scored on four of its first five possessions, then held on to beat No. 16/20 North Dakota State 23-13 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference game played Saturday, Oct. 18, before a crowd of 13,416 in the UNI-Dome.

North Dakota State (3-4, 1-3 MVFC) is scheduled to play at Illinois State (2-4, 1-2 MVFC) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. The Redbirds lost to Missouri State 34-28 at Hancock Stadium in Normal, Ill.

Northern Iowa (5-2, 3-1), which has won three straight games, intercepted North Dakota State quarterback Nick Mertens four times and recovered a fumble. The Panthers kept the Bison out of the end zone until midway though the fourth quarter when Mertens hit Kole Heckendorf on a 7-yard fade.

North Dakota State lost for the fourth time in five games. The Panthers held a 258-227 advantage in total offense and a 32:07 to 27:53 edge in time of possession. The Bison were 3 of 14 in third down conversions compared to 5 of 17 for UNI.

Pat Grace threw for 149 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game in the second half with a leg injury. He completed 12 of 23 passes, including a 35-yard touchdown to D.P. Eyman early in the second quarter, helping the Panthers to a 23-6 lead at the half.

Corey Lewis scored UNI's first touchdown on a 25-yard run with 5:38 left in the first quarter. It came on the first play after Jarred Herring's 70-yard kickoff return. Lewis finished with 64 yards on 13 carries.

Billy Hallgren kicked three field goals in the first half, including a career-best 47-yarder. His final kick of the half, a 21-yarder with five seconds left, capped a six-play, 50-yard drive.

NDSU struggled offensively all game. The Bison came in averaging 178 yards rushing but were held to just 99 yards on the ground. Pat Paschall ran 16 times for 57 yards.

Heckendorf scored NDSU's only touchdown with 9:09 left to play. He finished with 55 yards on five catches. Heckendorf became the program's all-time leader in receiving yards currently with 2,579 yards. He passed T.R. McDonald's previous record of 2,544 yards on 134 receptions set from 1990-93.

Mertens was 14-for-33 for 128 yards.

Shawn Bibeau kicked two field goals for the Bison. John Prelvitz punted seven times for an average of 41.6 yards per attempt and 36.7 net yards per punt.

Linebacker Mike Maresh led NDSU's defense with a career-high 11 tackles, while strong safety Cyrus Lemon had a career best 10 tackles. Jamar Thompson paced a balanced UNI defense with seven tackles, while Nick Nelson had six tackles and three pass breakups. Terrell Moore recorded two of the Panthers' four interceptions, while Thompson and Nelson each had one pick.
