North Dakota State Outruns UMKC 94-81

KANSAS CITY, Mo.--Jerri Penley scored 19 points to lead a group of five players in double-figures and Lisa Bue recorded her sixth "double-double" of the season as North Dakota State outran UMKC 94-81 in a Summit League women's basketball game played Monday, Feb. 18, in Swinney Recreation Center.

NDSU (10-5 Summit, 15-10) extended its current winning streak to six games and have won eight of its last nine. It's the longest winning streak since the 2004-05 season when the Bison went 26-1 and won their first 24 games.

North Dakota State, which improved to 7-6 on the road including 5-3 in league play, travels to South Dakota State (13-2 Summit, 20-6) for a 7 p.m. game Saturday, Feb. 23, in Brookings. The Jackrabbits rolled past Southern Utah 82-36 on Monday.

North Dakota State shot 60 percent in the first half and raced to a 54-37 halftime lead. The 54 points were the most points in a half this season for the Bison.

Alysa Klein hit a layup to put the Kangaroos ahead 12-9 with 16:01 remaining, but the advantage was short-lived. Brenda Slyt and Emily Moran both hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions and NDSU never surrendered the league again. Klein matched her career-high with 27 points with 16 coming in the opening half.

The Bison used a balanced inside-outside game to extend the UMKC (2-12 Summit, 9-16) defense and gradually pull away. Three-pointers by Amanda Girodat, Abby Plucker, Slyt and Moran opened lanes inside for Jill Zaruba, Penley and Bue. Giordat handed out seven assists to go along with 11 points. NDSU finished with a season-high 46 points in the paint.

NDSU's biggest lead was 24 points at 70-46 on Plucker's three-pointer with 13:01 left to play. The Bison finished shooting a season-high 57.1 percent from the field in the contest compared to 48.5 percent for UMKC.

North Dakota State maintained a double-digit lead until the final minute when the Kangaroos put together a 19-8 run. Chazny Morris' three-pointer cut the deficit to 89-81 with 27 seconds left. Morris scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half.

Penley hit 8 of 11 from the field and netted 13 of her team-high 19 in the second half. Bue scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record her sixth "double-double" of the season and the eighth of her career. The Bison held a 36-29 advantage on the boards. Bue moved into 19th place all-time on the NDSU all-time scoring list with 1,179 points, passing Jen Rademacher (1,167, 1992-96) and Jaime Berry (1,174, 1997-01).

Moran finished with 18 points and hit 4 of 8 three-pointers. She hit 10 of 16 from beyond the arc in two games during the weekend. Slyt contributed 14 points.
