ROCHESTER, Mich.--Erik Kangas made an off-balance 3-pointer with 7.2 seconds left to lift Oakland to a 77-76 victory over North Dakota State in Summit League men's basketball Friday, Jan. 2.
North Dakota State guard Ben Woodside's contested layup at the buzzer fell off the rim to send the Bison to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in The Summit League. Oakland improved to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the league.
It was Kangas' second game-winning shot against North Dakota State in the O'Rena. He hit from the opposite right-wing spot to beat NDSU 77-74 in the teams' second meeting last year.
Bison forward Brett Winkelman, who missed the team's afternoon shootaround with the stomach flu, scored a game-high 33 points on 12-of-19 shooting. Winkelman was 6-for-8 from the 3-point line, one shy of the school record. He added six rebounds and three steals.
North Dakota State opened the second half on a 13-3 run to build their biggest lead of nine points. Winkelman started it with a 3-pointer, Woodside made four free throws and a layup, and Lucas Moormann had a putback basket to give NDSU a 47-38 lead with 16:10 to play.
The Golden Grizzlies responded with a 21-5 run over the next 6 1/2 minutes to go ahead 59-52. Keith Benson had 11 of his 17 second-half points during that spurt.
Benson was one of four Oakland players in double figures. Drew Maynard scored 15 points, Johnathon Jones had 13 including his 1,000th career point midway through the first half, and Will Hudson scored 11.
Woodside finished with 14 points, six assists and five rebounds after going scoreless in the first half. Bison guard Mike Nelson went scoreless until the 6:58 mark of the second half and finished with three points all at the foul line.
North Dakota State returns home to host IUPUI at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, and Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10.
