FARGO, N.D.--Brett Winkelman had 16 points, including the last seven of the game, to lift North Dakota State over IUPUI 55-52 in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Jan. 8, before a crowd of 2,524 at the Bison Sports Arena.
The win vaulted North Dakota State (9-4, 4-1) into first place in The Summit League by a half game ahead of Oral Roberts and previous league leader Western Illinois, which lost at South Dakota State on Thursday.
North Dakota State trailed 52-48 with 1:34 to play. But Winkelman pulled NDSU within one on a three-point play, then gave the Bison a 53-52 lead on his sixth field goal of the game with 29 seconds remaining.
Winkelman's two free throws clinched it with two seconds left. Alex Young's desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer rimmed off.
The Bison led 21-20 at halftime despite shooting just 25 percent and making 2 of 14 three-pointers. NDSU was 4-for-20 from the arc altogether.
Ben Woodside led NDSU with 18 points. Michael Tveidt had nine points, three rebounds and three steals.
IUPUI (9-6, 2-2) got 12 points from Robert Glenn and 11 from Leroy Nobles. The Jaguars outrebounded the Bison 34-29.
North Dakota State hosts Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday on KXJB-TV in Fargo. The Leathernecks are 6-9 overall and 3-1 in the league after their 64-55 loss at South Dakota State.
