
North Dakota State Holds Off Western Illinois, 61-52

MACOMB, Ill.--Brett Winkelman scored a game-high 19 points and Michael Tveidt added 11 to lead North Dakota State to a 61-52 victory at Western Illinois in Summit League men's basketball Thursday, Feb. 5, before a crowd of 1,308 at Western Hall.
It was the ninth straight victory for North Dakota State, which improved to 17-5 overall and 11-1 in The Summit League. NDSU extended its first-place lead to 1 1/2 games with help from Oakland's 81-69 home win over Oral Roberts earlier in the evening.
Western Illinois slipped to 7-16 overall and 4-8 in the league.
North Dakota State led 23-17 at halftime and started the second half on an 11-2 run to pull away. NDSU went up by as many as 22 on a Winkelman 3-pointer that gave the Bison a 47-25 lead with 10:35 left.
Western Illinois chipped away with a 16-6 run over the next five minutes. After Ceola Clark kept the Leathernecks afloat with nine straight points, David DuBois scored the team's next 11 in a row to make it 53-41 with 5:37 left.
Clark finished with 19 to lead Western Illinois, DuBois finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, and Tommie Tyler scored 12.
NDSU guard Ben Woodside had seven points, six assists and three steals. He was 0-for-12 from the field but held Western Illinois guard David Nurse to an 0-for-9 night from the field and no points.
Winkelman had a team-high nine rebounds as NDSU outrebounded Western Illinois 34-33. The Bison shot 39 percent and Western Illinois shot 38 percent from the field.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play IUPUI at 7 p.m. EST on Saturday, Feb. 7, at The Jungle in downtown Indianapolis. IUPUI is 13-10 overall and 6-6 in the league after a 71-63 victory over South Dakota State on Thursday.
