Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.--North Dakota State University defeated Oakland University by the scores of 4-3 in 11 innings and 8-0 to sweep a Summit League women's softball doubleheader played Friday, April 10, at the University of Minnesota's Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
North Dakota State (22-13, 10-1 Summit) and Oakland (13-21, 6-8 Summit) close out the Summit League three-game series at noon Saturday, April 11.
Taylor Lynn's run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of 11th inning scored Nicole Rivera from second to give the Bison a hard-fought extra-inning win that covered nearly three hours. Rivera started the 11th with a single to left and advanced to second on a Breanna Konz sacrifice bunt.
Lynn's RBI single ended a pitching duel between Oakland's Jessica Granger and North Dakota State's Andi Padilla, who both went the distance.
Padilla (15-7) struck out a career-high eight batters over 11 innings. She allowed 10 hits, walked four and hit a pair of batters. Granger (10-9) struck out 12 batters and walked five.
North Dakota State came up with 17 hits, but stranded a school record 17 baserunners during the contest. Six different Bison players had two or more hits led by Laurel Pipkin's 4 for 5 including two runs scored and RBI, while Rivera collected three hits in six at-bats.
NDSU had to rally from a pair of deficits in the contest. Oakland went on top 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Caitlyn Lynch launched a towering two-run home run to left center. The Bison answered with a run on a Melissa Chmielewski RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
Kylie Schalz led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field to put the Golden Grizzlies ahead 3-2. Schalz was one of three OU players with two or more hits.
North Dakota State tied the game at 3-3 with three straight singles from Pipkin, Elisa Victa and Chmielewski to start the sixth inning.
The Bison helped Padilla with an alert defense including a pair of double plays in the late innings. Rivera and Pipkin combined to turn a DP up the middle in the seventh inning, catcher Kelly Cantrell picked off a runner in the ninth, and Konz and Chmielewski teamed up for a twin-killing in the 11th.
Kim Westendorf (5-3) won her fourth straight game with a three-hit shutout in the second game. It was Westendorf's second shutout of the season, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning. She struck out one and walked one.
North Dakota State's offense cranked up in the third inning. Konz led off the frame with a solo home run to left center, her third of the season. Victa singled home another run before Cantrell drilled a two-run double down the left field line to put the Bison ahead 4-0.
NDSU put four runs on the scoreboard to end the game in the fifth inning. Rivera was issued a walk to chase in the first run, while Konz laced a two RBI single and Taylor Mortensen's ground out sent home another.
Konz and Pipkin each had a pair of hits for North Dakota State. Pipkin finished the afternoon with a 6 for 8 effort at the plate.
Marisa Everitt and Alison Tansel pitched for Oakland with Everitt (2-3) picking up the loss.
