
North Dakota State Women Efficient in 64-52 Summit League Home Win Over IPFW

FARGO, N.D.--Katie Birkel scored a career-high 22 points and Ashley Samuelson added 15 as North Dakota State University defeated first-place IPFW 64-52 in a Summit League women's basketball game played Saturday, Jan. 23, before 835 spectators in the Bison Sports Arena. It was the Katherine Burgum Classic and NDSU improved to 4-0 in the event.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bison, who improved to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in the Summit League. NDSU is scheduled to host Oakland University (8-11, 5-3 Summit) at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25. The Golden Grizzlies lost 66-59 at South Dakota State on Satuday.
Anne Boese led the Mastodons (9-10, 6-2 Summit) with 15 points on the strength of five three-pointers. Four of Boese's three-pointers came in the first half as IPFW led 32-21 at the break.
North Dakota State gained a 45-43 lead when Janae Burich scored on a layup from a nifty pass by Danielle DeGagne with 11:47 left in the second half. The game was tied five times and the lead changed hands on seven occasions prior to the Burich bucket. Burich had 13 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
IPFW found a lid on the basket after that. Sydney Weinert converted a three-point play that drew the Mastodons to 47-46 with 9:47 remaining. Weinert finished with 14 points and nine rebounds to pick up IPFW's MVP of the K Burgum Classic.
The Bison MVP of the Classic was Birkel, who took over after that, scoring nine of North Dakota State's final 17 points. She made a career-high 9 of 12 field goals, hit 4 of 5 free throws and added four rebounds
Weinert's three-point play was IPFW's last points for nearly four minutes until she made a pair of free throws to close the gap to 51-48 with 5:39 left to play. It was IPFW's last field goal until Chelsey Jackson's jumper with 1:02 remaining.
North Dakota State made 50 percent from the field, connected on 65 percent from the free throw line and committed only 10 turnovers. The Bison turned 14 IPFW miscues into 12 points. Samuelson added seven rebounds and three steals to spark the defense. NDSU held a 34-28 rebounding edge.
IPFW hit 44.8 percent from the field in the first half including 6 of 10 from the three-point line. However, the Mastodons cooled to 29.2 percent in the second and made only 2 of 9 treys. Chelsey Jackson added 12 points, four assists and four rebounds for IPFW.
